Can You Hear Me Running

Take the children and yourself
And hide out in the cellar
By now the fighting will be close at hand
Don’t believe the church and state
And everything they tell you
Believe in me, I’m with the high command

Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?
Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?

There’s a gun and ammunition
Just inside the doorway
Use it only in emergency
Better you should pray to God
The Father and the Spirit
Will guide you and protect from up here

Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?
Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?

Swear allegiance to the flag
Whatever flag they offer
Never hint at what you really feel
Teach the children quietly
For some day sons and daughters
Will rise up and fight while we stood still

Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?
Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?

Can you hear me running (can you hear me calling you?)
(Can you hear me) hear me calling you?
(Can you hear me running) hear me running babe?
(Can you hear me running) hear me running?
Calling you, calling you

Silent Running – Mike & The Mechanics

Take a moment and watch the video link above for this song. Every time I watch it evokes a feeling of urgency, a sense of how unstable this world really is. “It’s only an animal” and many other sayings only scratch at the surface of how insensitive some people can be, how little regard many have for the world around us.

This post was inspired by a Facebook share from a friend that showed a whale dying from ingesting plastic bags tossed into the ocean. Every time I see something like this I just want to scream and rant for the helpless creatures that die needlessly because of the stupid humans that inhabit this Earth. I wish I could go back to a time of simple living without all the “Conveniences” we have today that lead to the defiling of the planet. My wish will soon come true.

I feel more at home with animals then I do humans, and I always will. I cherish the trust my dog puts in me and I would never do any thing to break that bond. As much as he counts on me for his food, I count on him for the companionship I have never had from a person. That may sound sad or a little weird, but it’s more that just that.

I think there is an unspoken bond between humans and animals, something many people can’t see or just ignore. A kind of understanding that we all have a purpose in the revolving circle of life if you will. Each in kind must do it’s part without interfering with the other, follow the natural path we were meant for. The animals are doing their part but we humans are stepping all over their habitat.

We take and take with no thought of what we are doing to the balance of it all, and I don’t see that changing in my lifetime. Many people talk a good game about fixing this or that, charities are started and checks written to “Make a difference” or other such platitudes. I for one am not going to invest the small amount of time I have left giving to groups that never really make much of a difference. I will do the one thing I can do, and that is stop contributing to the problem through rampant consumerism.

Living on my future boat will allow me to reduce if not completely stop the purchase of many items that lead to the trash in the oceans, the glass on the beach. The landfills I drive by, the filthy squalor of many highways in this country. I will change my lifestyle to reflect how much I love nature and all it’s blessings, the simple beauty of a sunrise or the playful nudge from my friend. I will spend my time in the pursuit of harmony with all and hatred for none.

This is my promise to me and to all that surrounds us. I will do my part even if others never follow.

  1. I’m glad the Whale post prompted this excellent post. I feel your inner screams in your words. It is powerful. As it should be. We all need to wake up and stop being so ruddy selfish. We share this planet whether we like it or not and we throttling the oceans with garbage, filling up huge areas of land with our waste which then rots and causes yet more problems with the environment and the atmosphere is unforgivable. One of the things I want to be is truly packaging free. I know that when we are settled in our forever place this will be possible. Buying from small suppliers and supplying my own cloth bags to carry things home in, growing much of what we eat, canning, preserving all these things will help. I don’t know if it will be possible to be truly free from packaging but I am going to give it my best shot. For the sake of all the creatures and the environment, I will do my best. By the way, I don’t trust people who don’t like animals. Not one little bit.

  2. Boy, I miss glass jars. Today’s plastic flavors stuff. By the way, lots of charities benefit the top office people before the cause subjects. One of the animal cause charities paid a guy $450k without ever running a shelter! FRAUDS!

  3. Next time you & your camera are on NJTPK northbound @ exit 5 on-ramp, grab a pic of the OLD HoJo motel sign before it disappears into highway history.
