Within You Without You

We were talking
About the space between us all
And the people who hide themselves
Behind a wall of illusion
Never glimpse the truth
Then it’s far too late
When they pass away

We were talking
About the love we all could share
When we find it
To try our best to hold it there
With our love, with our love
We could save the world
If they only knew

Try to realize it’s all within yourself
No one else can make you change
And to see you’re really only very small
And life flows on within you and without you

We were talking
About the love that’s gone so cold
And the people who gain the world
And lose their soul
They don’t know, they can’t see
Are you one of them

When you’ve seen beyond yourself
Then you may find
Peace of mind is waiting there
And the time will come
When you see we’re all one
And life flows on within you and without you

Within You Without You – The Beatles

I was driving in Pennsylvania this morning and this thought came to me. Why do I spend so much time judging others and worrying about what others think of me? We all do it, cast our eyes upon others with disparaging thoughts, belittling their approach to this or that with a haughty idea that our way would be better. We may even fool ourselves with the notion that all we want to do is help, no offense is meant or implied. The true story is that it’s just a way to soothe our own insecurities and bolster our ego.

I think part of it is built in to everyone, perhaps part of our “ID” where innate instinctive impulses and primary processes are manifest. We live in an illusion, a construct of sorts where life can seem like a movie, each frame a passing moment on our celluloid journey. The reality of time flowing by till our time is up, and only then understanding what we missed. I need to break this cycle before I let my life pass me by.

I recently tried to improve this site by using a different service. I created a new website that suited my ego better, trying to present a side of me that was not complete. I don’t believe in fate, but perhaps the failure of that attempt has shone a light on what matters most. Be true to yourself and let the chips fall where they may. I will take the lesson learned and improve this site in a way that is true to the vision in my mind.

Part of that vision is sharing photograph’s and video’s of the refit of “Renegade” my Pearson 30 sailboat as well as my travels. In the last year I have spent a considerable amount of money on camera gear, a Mac book laptop and a drone with a high def camera. The only thing left is better software for processing video and photo’s but I will wait on that. I posted my first video below of the Winterport boatyard where my future sits awaiting my attention this spring. (In the upper left corner of the group of boats at the end is a small boat with no mast covered in shrink wrap…RENEGADE!)

I need to see beyond myself, make the change only I can from within. The path may be shaded by many trees, narrow and rocky with many pitfalls, but like George Harrison wrote in this song…

When you’ve seen beyond yourself
Then you may find
Peace of mind is waiting there
And the time will come
When you see we’re all one
And life flows on within you and without you

    1. Oh, and I have been taking pics with just a Canon Rebel t6I with a 24 – 100 mm lens but I just purchased a used Canon 5D mark ll. I can’t afford a mark lll at $3500.00!

    1. Mac book pro and a Mavic Pro drone. Built in 4k camera but not waterproof. When I use it on the boat I have to learn to launch and retrieve by hand! That should be fun!

  1. Judging : It’s not looking down, it’s “I’m DEMANDED to do this, but that bonehead can do whatever!”. We do NOT live in a world of equality. That is the biggest lie foisted upon the country since the New Deal.

  2. I love the video – simply love it. I love George Harrison’s words and I love yours. You are so right. Just do what you are doing and do it the best you can, the rest will follow. Damn right it will. You have so much talent and I can’t wait to see more of your pictures and films. Your words get better and better and I am proud of you.

  3. All the struggle just makes us stronger. My first book was not the fantastic success that I thought it would be. Perhaps my second memoir will be better. Truth is that the first is not my best writing. Just like you, I have honed my skills on WP>

      1. I have never had any agenda, other than to write about travel. My blog is like my head, constantly darting from one subject to the other. It always amazes me which posts are most popular! People are weird!!!
