Be Still My Beating Heart

Be still my beating heart
It would be better to be cool
It’s not time to be open just yet
A lesson once learned is so hard to forget

Be still my beating heart
Or I’ll be taken for a fool
It’s not healthy to run at this pace
The blood runs so red to my face

I’ve been to every single book I know
To soothe the thoughts that plague me so

I sink like a stone that’s been thrown in the ocean
My logic has drowned in a sea of emotion
Stop before you start
Be still my beating heart

Be still my beating heart
You must learn to stand your ground
It’s not healthy to run at this pace
The blood runs so red to my face

I’ve been to every single book I know
To soothe the thoughts that plague me so
Stop before you start
Be still my beating heart

Never to be wrong
Never to make promises that break
It’s like singing in the wind
Or writing on the surface of a lake

And I wriggle like a fish caught on dry land
Struggle to avoid any help at hand

I sink like a stone that’s been thrown in the ocean
My logic has drowned in a sea of emotion
Stop before you start
Be still my beating heart

Be Still My Beating Heart – Sting

When you write something, have you ever stopped to think about who you are writing it for? A lost love or friend, a family member gone, or perhaps someone yet to be found. I have written to them all but today I’m writing to myself….

Be still my beating heart, be cool and controlled as you follow the path to your goals. Don’t be overwhelmed by the tasks at hand, don’t be sullied by the weakness of others. The trials of perpetual learning teach you that all things come in time if your focus is great, if you fail to bend to the wind of fear. A lesson once learned is so hard to forget, the lesson was taught through the pain of failure.

Failure to follow through with dreams of the past, shallow and weak in the face of effort. Logic and emotion, enemies of each other, yet both are a part of what make you real. Each has a part to play, a balance must be found. One cannot be half a man, I must escape the dominant control of either. A tightrope walk it is, perfection achieved over a lifetime of practice.

Be still my beating heart, don’t be taken for a fool. You must stand your ground with the uncertainty of an unknown destiny. You cannot foresee all that comes, be prepared for anything. But you can go forth and have no fear, you can accept that some things will hurt. In time you will find a way to soothe the thoughts that plague, let go the bitterness of regret.

You cannot be everything to all without sacrificing your gift to yourself. A blind man cannot see the beauty of a summer day, a deaf man won’t hear the tones of an opera. Yet both can feel the wind on their skin, both can smell the fragrance of a rose. Only an open mind will take in all that you need to live a fulfilling life, only by understanding you know nothing can you truly reach a point of lasting joy.

Be still my beating heart, in time all will be revealed.

  1. What a wonderful liturgy to yourself. With each step forward you take you move a little further from the past that held you shackled in pain, with each beat of that heart you feel your father calling you on to your goals. Blind and deaf we mostly are and yet …. if we care to force the eyes and ears open what an incredible world and life we can have. The life that fits perfectly, that effects no-one else and that with that intoxicating mantle of content upon us means that we are fit and ready to meet the person to walk alongside us. Or sail 😉
