Hold On For One More Day

I know there’s pain
Why do lock yourself up in these chains?
No one can change your life except for you
Don’t ever let anyone step all over you
Just open your heart and your mind
Is it really fair to feel this way inside?

Some day somebody’s gonna make you want to
Turn around and say goodbye
Until then baby are you going to let them
Hold you down and make you cry
Don’t you know?
Don’t you know things can change
Things’ll go your way
If you hold on for one more day
Can you hold on for one more day
Things’ll go your way
Hold on for one more day

You could sustain
Or are you comfortable with the pain?
You’ve got no one to blame for your unhappiness
You got yourself into your own mess
Lettin’ your worries pass you by
Don’t you think it’s worth your time
To change your mind?

Some day somebody’s gonna make you want to
Turn around and say goodbye
Until then baby are you going to let them
Hold you down and make you cry
Don’t you know?
Don’t you know things can change
Things’ll go your way
If you hold on for one more day
Can you hold on for one more day
Things’ll go your way
Hold on for one more day

I know that there is pain
But you hold on for one more day and
Break free from the chains
Yeah I know that there is pain
But you hold on for one more day and you
Break free, break from the chains

Some day somebody’s gonna make you want to
Turn around and say goodbye
Until then baby are you going to let them
Hold you down and make you cry
Don’t you know?
Don’t you know things can change
Things’ll go your way
If you hold on for one more day yeah
If you hold on

Don’t you know things can change
Things’ll go your way
If you hold on for one more day
If you hold on
Can you hold on
Can you hold on baby
Won’t you tell me now
Hold on for one more day ’cause
It’s gonna go your way

Hold On – Wilson Phillips

a (5)I recently told a friend that I was considering changing this blog by stepping back from my more personal approach and focusing on a more commercial venture. Photography is something I hope will lead to a small part of my income as I sail the coast of the US and abroad, and my intention was to push that aspect of my life in an effort to forward my monetary goal. As I reflected on that conversation I realized I was falling into the same old trap, the same retreat from society that I always fall back on when things become difficult. I have decided against such a path.

Self doubt is a powerful adversary, a demon that has controlled my life for so long. It’s only been a few years since I realized just how big a hold over me it had, how easy the sense could shape my behavior. Someone once said to me, “Everything is a crisis with you” and she was correct in her outside view. What she never did was try to understand where that fear was coming from, and neither did I. So insidious is self doubt that I had no idea I looked at each situation from the viewpoint of one unsure of his beliefs, apprehensive about every choice. That same fear took hold of me this past 2 weeks and almost caused me to make some bad decisions.

IMG_6674 (Large)I’m only a year or less away from my goal, yet it seems like a lifetime. My fears swell with each passing week, compounded by some insecurity at work. Many of the past few weeks have been less than healthy in the pay department and I even considered changing companies. I tried to justify the change with the thought of expanding my driving area beyond the Northeast for the last year of my trucking career as I’m so tired of the traffic and limited miles I can drive in a week. I had an offer for a much higher rate per mile with the driving area expanded to all 48 contiguous states, but I must admit my loyalty to this company runs deep. They have been very good to me during the past years dealing with my fathers death and other time off that I needed, and loyalty is something so hard to find. Unless things progress down further, I will stay with the people I consider friends.

Life throws many challenges at you, some simple and some overwhelming at times. You have no choice but to overcome or fall by the wayside. You can’t let anyone come between you and your goals, even if it’s your own internal weakness. You are in control of your own life no matter what happens. Things may not turn out as you planned, but ultimately your worth to yourself is what drives one to accept the downfalls.

If you look back at the end of your life, will you feel you did the best you could with the time and experiences you had, or will you complain about this or that not being fair? Life is not fair I’m sorry to say, so get over it! Keep your life simple, work hard for what you have and just live the best you can. Remember, if you have only one true friend in this world, so be it. One is better than none.

      1. Good morning. That makes it sound hard, because lessons always seem hard to me. It should also have moments of fun! : )

  1. Self-doubt is throttling, crippling and insidious. It lurks in the shadows and when it sees the vaguest glint of opportunity it pounces taking us entirely unawares. But you beat it off this time. You let the strengthened rational mind that you have been nurturing and cultivating this long while to win though and that is to be celebrated. Life deals lemons all the time, but it is what we do with those lemons that is the crucial. You decided not to make a knee-jerk response to a depressing money situation win, you decided to stay with those that have supported you. As an inveterate runner-awayer, I know what a mighty thing that is. And I salute you. Get a calendar and cross off the days. And your photographs, my friend, when the time comes will be big sellers. Keep taking each day at a time and keep the few close. Especially Vinnie. His heart will never waiver and he will see you though the hard miles in that truck.
