The World I Know

Has our conscience shown?
Has the sweet breeze blown?
Has all the kindness gone?
Hope still lingers on
I drink myself of newfound pity
Sitting alone in New York City
And I don’t know why

Are we listening
Hymns of offering?
Have we eyes to see
That love is gathering?
All the words that I’ve been reading
Have now started the act of bleeding
Into one, into one

So I walk up on high
And I step to the edge
To see my world below
And I laugh at myself
While the tears roll down
‘Cause it’s the world I know
Oh it’s the world I know

I drink myself of newfound pity
Sitting alone in New York City
And I don’t know why, don’t know why

So I walk up on high
And I step to the edge
To see my world below
And I laugh at myself
While the tears roll down
‘Cause it’s the world I know
Oh it’s the world I know

So I walk up on high
And I step to the edge
To see my world below
And I laugh at myself
While the tears roll down
‘Cause it’s the world I know
Oh it’s the world I know

The World I Know – Collective Soul

If you follow this blog I assume it’s because you like what I write. If that holds true please follow the link above and watch the video for this song before you read any further as it is a big part of the inspiration for this post.

What do you feel at this moment? Do you understand what this songwriter wanted you to see? Can you grasp the simple beauty of this song? I saw the very same thing in my mind a few years ago and it changed my life. I saw the futility of society’s hold on us, the never ending search for money as if it will solve all, the lure of shiny objects that never last. To some I must seem like a fool pursuing a minimalist lifestyle, giving up all that I have achieved over years of toil with the yoke of selfish pursuits crushing me. My path is not for all, but I feel freedom approaching me at a furious pace.

Like the bridge in the image above my path is leading to blue skies and a better life. I feel the yoke had been lifted off of me when I made my last payment on my sailboat this past week. My future home will be moved to a local boatyard in Winterport Maine on the 29th of this month and I will begin the restoration work in earnest in the spring. Like the man in the video, something settled on me and brought my focus 180 degree’s around and made me realize there is so much more to life than what we see on TV. The greatest gifts to ones soul can be gained by living a much more simple life in accord with ones surroundings. One only need the simplest things to sustain life and nirvana can be found by just changing the world you know.

Something else happened today that reinforced my will to hurry my goals to fruition, I found out a friend almost died. I have not known this person all that long, but I feel a strong connection of a like minded soul. We are following different ideas when it comes to homes but the plan is the same. Live a life as simple as possible and enjoy what is free and right in front of us.

Life is a finite thing with no set start or finish, no timeline with which to judge our progress. We must move with all speed as the clock of ones time on this earth is not readable, the shadow of circumstance blocks our view. One day we are looking ahead to greener pastures, the next we are struck down by a shot from the dark. The only thing you can really count on in this world is that your time will end no matter how close you are to your goals. Sometimes even the best of us lose the race before the goal line is even in view.

01 (2)To my friend I say this is your chance to make it work. This is your time to pursue your goal as quickly as possible as you have no way of knowing what this world will throw at you. Now is the time to evaluate just how much more you need to live the life you want, how many shiny things do you need to give you peace in your heart. My hope is that I die a content man surrounded by the simple things that give me the most pleasure. A beautiful sunrise, the smell of the trees on the morning breeze, the comfort of my best furry friend. The gentle rocking of my boat at anchor, the taste of a fresh apple. So much in this life is taken for granted by so many, I have determined that I will not be one of them.

  2. Yup – I like what you write, you know that. I also like the spirit of you. And I also have to acknowledge the same friend (emailed) …. it put everything neatly back in perspective. Can I come visit you BOTH soon please – I think we need to celebrate life and the pursuit of happiness and content which I believe is a shared goal of each of us 😌
