Closer To The Heart

And the men who hold high places
Must be the ones who start
To mold a new reality
Closer to the heart
Closer to the heart

The blacksmith and the artist
Reflect it in their art
They forge their creativity
Closer to the heart
Yes closer to the heart

Philosophers and plowmen
Each must know his part
To sow a new mentality
Closer to the heart
Yes closer to the heart, yeah, oh

Whoa whoa
You can be the captain
And I will draw the chart
Sailing into destiny
Closer to the heart
Closer to the heart
Well closer to the heart, yeah
Closer to the heart
Closer to the heart
I said closer to the heart
Well closer to the heart, yeah
Closer to your heart
Closer to your heart, whoa

Closer To The Heart – Rush

Yesterday I went to the marina where I will store my sailboat while refitting her. I wanted to talk to the manager about placement in the yard with an eye to the longevity of the time “on the hard” so we wont have to move it until complete. It’s a small yard and some boats may be placed if front of others so I would prefer to be placed in the back row. None of the staff was there but when I went into an open door I was greeted by, well, just what I needed.

This is not my boat, but one can dream! No, this boat belongs to the very nice lady I met that called to me from topsides. She was working on the new teak deck that had been installed as part of the finishing touches of a 3 year complete refit on her floating home. When I climbed the steps I felt that same rush of excitement that overcame me when I first stepped aboard my boat, though mine is much smaller.

The first thing that struck me was how kind and enthusiastic she was about her boat, and her sincere interest in mine. Being many years my senior it was obvious she had much more experience in sailing and boat projects than I, and as we talked about what I had in mind it was reassuring to know most of my ideas for my refit were spot on.

This was the first time I had met someone in the boating world that made me feel so right at home. I felt almost a kinship at this first meeting that wasn’t there with some others I have met at this yard. Her mind was sharp, her demeanor commanding, but her smile said it all. She loves sailing.

When I told her the boat I bought she told me of her time living in Portsmouth Rhode Island, the same town my boat was built in, and voiced her positive opinions of my choice. We discussed sails and anchors, non skid decks and main-sheets. In a short time she had given me real insight into my work to come that I never read in any book or web page. That’s the beauty of talking face to face with someone who has been there, someone who knows what works best.

As we ended or time together she said to come see her when my boat is in the yard as she would love to come and sit inside with me and talk at length about sailing and my plans. I must admit I was a little overwhelmed with her kindness and generosity. It has been my experience in life that few people are so willing to help, few are so honestly willing to give of the one thing you have a limited amount of and that’s time.

IMG_8250As I drove away from the yard I had a renewed spirit, a reinvigorated commitment to my goal of a life worth writing about. I could see in her eyes what I wanted to feel in my heart. I only have a few payments left and my future home will be in the yard. I wont have much time this winter to get much done but I will work hard and save every penny until spring and begin the next chapter in my life. Through the process of restoring this boat I will be molding a new reality, closer to my heart!
